Why do I Paint?

Painting a Picture of the Blue Door

One of the best things about art is that it’s a powerful form of self-expression.

It’s a way of expressing yourself without saying a word.

I’ve always found that I can say much more with music and art than just by talking, and there are no language boundaries.

I have been creative all my life and I can’t imagine what it would be like without doing something creative.

I don’t paint every day though as it can become a job (I don’t want one of those any more)

I have bursts of inspiration and periods when I don’t paint.

Where do I get my inspiration?

Inspiration from the Cotswold Woodlands

I am extremely fortunate to live in the Cotswolds. One of the most beautiful areas in the UK.

We are surrounded by high hills and wooded valleys and you can’t help but be inspired by the amazing views.

I am often going for walks with my wife Shirley where we capture pictures of any scene that inspires us.

Inspiration from Sunsets

We both love sunsets and interesting cloud formations with Shirley often taking many pictures as soon as she sees a beautiful sky, particular at sunset.

How do I paint?

My artist tools

Once I have decided on the subject, be it a beautiful scene, animal or interesting building, I choose a size and format, square or rectangular. Prepare the canvas with gesso and sketch an outline of the subject and begin painting. Basic light and shade, then fill in the detail as I go.

I choose good quality materials. 90% of the time I use acrylic paints, but have used oils.

Each painting takes quite a time to produce until I am happy with the results.

If I have a fault, it's being too much of a perfectionist.
